Dr. Darren Low
Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada, Doctor Low showed early signs of his calling when he tamed a “wild” barn cat as a four-year-old. His fellow veterinary students at the Atlantic Veterinary College recognized it, too, when they dubbed him the Quintessential Family Vet. For twenty-five years, Doctor Low practiced as the other family doctor on Cape Breton Island, where he and his wife raised one human son, four canines and fifteen felines in a rambling old farmhouse.
When not practicing medicine, he enjoyed long-distance running and helping with his son’s football and judo clubs. For over a decade, he also wrote the columns Family Tails and Paws for Reflection, each celebrating the profound bond shared between humans and their nonhuman family members. In 2021, eager to escape the corporate takeover of veterinary medicine and looking for new adventures, he and his wife and their three remaining cats came to California.
As a long-time ethical vegan, Doctor Low’s philosophy puts patient care first, but he never forgets the many concerns of his clients. He’s delighted to continue his practice here at a family-run hospital that shares his priorities. It was with gratitude and humility he accepted partnership and the position of medical director with Alta View Animal Hospital. He now looks forward to becoming your other family doctor.
