Our Staff consists of highly trained personnel that work hard everyday to insure that you and your pet are treated in the best way possible.

                  Dr. Michael J. Sterns   


Dr. Sterns earned a BS in Biological Sciences, magna cum laude, from University of Southern California. He graduated from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1984, and began his career as an ambulatory Equine Veterinarian practicing medicine and surgery on The Peninsula. His patients included horses, cows, sheep, goats and the occasional llama. After five years in veterinary practice, he returned to the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley to earn his MBA.

He began his business career as the technical business development director for ALZA Corporation, specializing in drug delivery technologies with applications in both human and Veterinary Medicine. He helped to finance, grow and launch startup companies in multiple therapeutic areas, including infectious disease, cardiovascular disease, and oncology, culminating as the Chief Business Officer for Xenogen Corporation where he ran the international sales and marketing team.

Several years ago, he returned to the veterinary field to bring innovative human medical device technologies to Veterinarians, and also began practicing as a small animal relief Veterinarian. In addition to his daily role at Alta View, Dr. Sterns also acts as a product development consultant for both veterinary and human pharmaceutical and device companies hoping to launch new surgical tools and drug products in the fields of cancer and obesity to improve the quality of life for dogs and cats.

He has a special interest in large dogs and currently shares his home with Joey Neutron, a 130-pound Leonberger who thinks he is a lap dog, his wife and three teenagers.  He also raised a Champion Newfoundland stud growing up in Maine,. “The Giant Breeds are just different than small dogs as both puppies and adults. Because of their weight, rate of growth and size, they have a lot in common with small horses” ”They are great family dogs, but people need to be knowledgeable and ready for some special challenges!”
